When I went to put the car on the rack, I saw Wally a sittin in the back-seat. I tole him he would have to get out and wait. He didn`t respond. I said it again a little louder. Still no response. I figured he was sleeping, just dead tired because I knew they`d been blizzarded in for quite a spell. I hated to wake him up but I couldn`t jus leave him there cuz if he woke up an got out of the car he would get hurt. I opened the door and shook him. I realized then I had been half right. It wasn`t that he was tired. He was dead.
I yelled out to Lenny to find Annie and get her back here on the double. There was no way I was gonna put him up there and have sompthin happen. It was just too weird for me.
He got Annie back there an I started askin all kindsa questions. She tole me that Wally had been over takin care of the other ranch when a blizzard hit. After the storm cleared out she went to see how he was doin. She got there an found him layin in the house in bed. He had been gored in the belly by one of the bulls. By the time she got there, it was all infected and he was awful sick. She doctored him up as best she could with the penicillin they had for the cows. She just went on and on about how he just up and died on her. ``I almost had him all doctored back to health when he just up and died. Men just ain`t got no fiber. They`re just too weak. He should have been able to fight that infection off.`` she said. She never really had much use for men. Well anyhow, he died and there was no way she could get him to town because there was too much work to be done now that he had up and died and the roads were still bad. She hauled him out to the barn and set him on a stump where the animals wouldn`t get him and he froze there. After the work had been caught up on and the roads cleared up she loaded him up and brought him into town.
She said she would go take him to the funeral home and stop back in later but she was mad at me because she didn`t have much time. She had to get back home to the work. She was mumbling all the way to the car about how men were weak and had no fiber.``
